CloudPlatform Management Server Shuts Itself Down

Hello,

I've just done a fresh install of Xenserver 6.0.2, and I've created a VM for the CloudPlatform management server using CentOS 6.3 64-bit. Everything installed fine, as I've previously worked out the bumps installing older versions of CloudPlatform. Until... I tried to setup a zone. The wizard created all the networking and storage, but when it got to the "Adding a Host" step, the management server suddenly shutdown!

After starting the management server back up a couple times, I found these lines in /var/log/cloud/management/management-server.log:

2012-10-18 18:00:45,068 WARN [cloud.vm.VirtualMachineManagerImpl] (AgentTaskPool-1:null) Found an alien VM Cloudstack Mgmt
2012-10-18 18:00:45,178 WARN [cloud.vm.VirtualMachineManagerImpl] (AgentTaskPool-1:null) Stopping a VM which we do not have any record of Cloudstack Mgmt

So now the management server will turn itself off as long as the cloud-management service is running. The only way around it is to reinstall the software and database on the management.

I've never had this problem with Cloudstack before; anyone else seeing this problem? How can I avoid it?

Hi, Peter. From your description it sounds like CloudStack is running in a VM on an XS host you are trying to manage with CloudStack. This is not supported. CloudStack will shut down any VMs it doesn't know about (i.e. the "alien VM" mentioned in the log) on the XS hosts it manages (including, apparently, itself :) ). I think this was possible on some old versions (2.2.x, and maybe older 3.0.x) but it causes problems with VM allocation and is not allowed on the newer 3.0.x releases. You should create a VM on a separate, non-CloudStack-managed XS host, to run CloudStack and the MySQL server (if it is separate).

Is there any way to resolve this problem without the need to reinstall the whole management server?
Can I remove the mentioned host with a script or something else?

Any help ist really appreciated ;-).

This used to be possible in version 3.0.1 at least. It does make it a little harder to test things out when you can't put the management vm on the hypervisor you're using.

Gerhard, you should be able to export the management vm and import it to another hypervisor.

Oh yeah, and the new CloudPlatform also apparently destroys any vm's that you add to a Zone, so make sure there aren't any vm's you want to lose!
