alerts for desktop format or agent removal

Hi,

If any RCA agent gets removed or a desktop is formatted then the RCA agent gets removed and we cannot get any inventory or infor about the PC. Is there any mechanism in RCA that we can get alert for the removal of agent or desktop formatting.

Regards,
Sumant Kulkarni

Hi Sumant,

If there aren't any security measures preventing a user from removing RCA or formatting his or her desktop, the last connect time stated in the reports can be used to diagnose which agents haven't connected to the server. If they were supposed to connect and haven't, you can then remote to the machine and check if the missed connect is due to an uninstallation of RCA/formatting of the machine, or if something else happened that prevented the connect from running.

Ana

Right now, there is no alert mechanism which can do so. If the administrator believes there are chances of agent removal, then can consider lockdown agent

Hi Sumant,

Additionally you could remove/hide the "RCA Agent" from the control panel along with the solution Praveen provided to lock down the agent could be a good solution if you feel that some user will try to uninstall this or remove it manually.

This may be what Deepu is referring to in his answer, but you can remove the "uninstall" ability in Add\Remove programs so that the users can't even initiate an uninstall. This is done in the registry in the following location:  HKEY_LOCAL _MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.  You'll have to find the folder that shows the Radia Client Automation Application Manager Agent and add the NoRemove key with a  value of 1. The next time you open Add\Remove programs the uninstall section for that software will not show up. You can push out this registry key to those who already have the client installed.

Alternatively, I also believe you can set the option on the client during the install process. That way when the client is installed it will automatically remove the uninstall option in Add\Remove programs going forward. There is a section in the Install.ini for the client install that prevents users from removing the agent.

Also keep in mind that if you have Audits running you will need to delete the device data from the Inventory database before re-installing the Radia agent in order to maintain data integrity. This could be automated along with the detection/re-installation of the Radia agent using a custom script that is executed either locally via a schedule or a third party utility to target/scan the network on demand for Radia agents that are out of sync/missing.

Most Radia admins forget to clean up the Radia Inventory Database before re-imaging/re-installing the Radia agent which causes inaccurate reporting for reports like Add/Remove programs or File Audit.

I would assume admin will not login to each machine and will do the uninstallation manually. If admin wants to uninstall then admin can execute the command msiexec /x {product code}.
