Monitoring RouterVMs

Greetings,

Setting up some monitoring for router vms.

Wondering how folks were checking services on router VMs?

For the first pass I am doing basic ping checks withe nagios to the make sure the device is up. What else should I be checking?

Feel free to point me at other docs, threads, posts etc.

Monitoring RouterVMs

Hi, there are several things you can normally monitor on a virtual router. I think the following will provide a good indication of the virtual router health.

8080/tcp - VM password reset service
80/tcp - Apache service for VM meta- and user-data
53/udp - DNS (dnsmasq)

Depending on the environment, these ports may or may not be accessible to your monitoring server. For example, they typically will not be accessible for virtual routers in isolated networks.

There are other services that may be running, depending on the configuration. For example, if you enable the VPN feature, you can monitor 500/udp (Openswan).
